SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT CELL

Skill development is the ability to identify skill gap and acquiring through deliberate, systematic, and sustained effort to carryout complex activities involving cognitive skills, technical skills, and interpersonal skills. It enhances the proficiency of a person in any area. It is a career-orientated method of teaching to equip individuals with the competencies required to perform a particular job. Multiple skills are required for a person to successfully executea task. Skill development thereby enhances the proficiency of a person in any area, nurturing their talents to build professional network. It is an integral part of an employee’s life, a necessity for career growth. Rayburn college as an educational institution for youth, endeavours to develop these skills and has taken the initiative by introducing training and employability programmes. This initiative is aimed at empowering the youth with adequate skill sets, to equip them with market-relevant skills and boost their chances of getting employment in various sectors of the economy.

Education can be defined as the knowledge, skills and development collectively gained from one’s study or training. In the last decade, the education system in our country has tremendously taken a leap thereby enlarging its area of focus. As per 2011 census, the literacy rate in Manipur is about 76%. However, we are well aware of the gap between literacy rate and rate of employment. This is because literacy does not always translate into employability skills. Manipur’s education system for instance, focus on rote learning and system of evaluation is through written exams. Under such system, there is no space for conceptual understanding, critical analysis, and implementation of ideas. The curriculum hardly has space for vocational courses which students can make use of in day-to-day life.   In the 21st century, the system has come to realise the need to build employability skills and with it also, expansion of markets and space for trade and self employment generation. Skill development can also be understood as a continuous process. Multiple skills are required for a person to successfully execute a task. Skill development thereby enhances the proficiency of a person in any area, nurturing their talents to build professional network. Skill development and training is an integral part of an employee’s life, a necessity for career growth.
