Department of Zoology Educational Field Trip to an Aquarium, Bungmual

The Department of Zoology, Rayburn College, organized an educational field trip to an aquarium for 1st Semester undergraduate students on the 21st of October, 2026 (Wednesday) to provide practical exposure to ornamental fish diversity, aquarium management, and aquatic biodiversity. The visit was designed to supplement classroom teaching with firsthand observation and experiential learning, enabling students to connect theoretical concepts in ichthyology, aquatic ecology, and fish biology with practical applications.

During the visit, students observed various species of ornamental freshwater and marine fishes, where available, and learned about their identifying characteristics, morphological adaptations, feeding habits, behaviour, and habitat preferences. They were introduced to the basic requirements of aquarium maintenance, including aquarium setup, water quality management, filtration and aeration systems, lighting, temperature regulation, feeding schedules, and the importance of maintaining suitable environmental conditions for fish health and survival.

The field trip also provided insights into the selection and compatibility of fish species, prevention and management of common fish diseases, breeding practices, and the role of aquatic plants in maintaining a balanced aquarium environment. Students gained an understanding of the commercial significance of ornamental fish culture, aquarium trade, and its potential as an entrepreneurial opportunity. The visit further emphasized the importance of responsible aquarium keeping, conservation of aquatic biodiversity, and the ethical handling and welfare of ornamental fishes.

The activity encouraged active participation, observation, interaction, and inquiry among students, thereby enhancing their practical knowledge and scientific outlook. Overall, the field trip was a valuable experiential learning activity that strengthened students’ understanding of fish biology and aquarium science while highlighting the educational, ecological, and economic importance of ornamental fisheries.
