One-Day hands-on Microscopy Training for Trainers

The Department of Zoology, Rayburn College, successfully conducted a Microscopy Training Program on 22nd November 2025 at the college zoology laboratory. The training session was designed to enhance the basic understanding and practical skills of participants regarding the proper handling and usage of microscopes.

The session was facilitated by an invited resource person, Thomas TK Tungnung, Proprietor, T&K SciNapse Enterprise who delivered an in-depth and engaging lecture on foundational microscopy techniques. He began by explaining the history, basic structure and essential components of a standard laboratory microscope. Participants were taught how to properly hold, clean, and maintain a microscope to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. The demonstration included step-by-step instructions on safe handling practices, correct posture while using the microscope, and methods to avoid common user errors.

A major highlight of the training was the practical demonstration on slide preparation. The resource person taught the participants how to prepare both temporary and semi-permanent slides, employing different mounting materials and appropriate laboratory procedures. This hands-on component enabled the participants to solidify their learning through direct practice. All attendees were given the opportunity to individually operate a microscope and prepare their own slides. This active engagement was widely appreciated and contributed to the success of the program. Many participants expressed that the training significantly improved their confidence in using microscopes effectively.

The program was especially impactful for the teachers from various institutions who attended, as well as for faculty members within the college. For many, the training served as an eye-opening experience, offering new perspectives on microscopy techniques and laboratory practices.

In conclusion, the Microscopy Training Program was a highly informative and enriching event. It not
only strengthened the technical skills of the participants but also fostered a deeper appreciation for
microscopy as an essential tool in biological studies. The Department of Zoology, Rayburn College,
looks forward to organizing similar capacity-building programs in the future.
